But can straight white guys experience the same easy sexual fluidity, or would kissing a guy just mean that they are really gay? Not Gay thrusts deep into a world where straight guy-on-guy action is not a myth but a reality: there's fraternity and military hazing rituals, where new recruits are made to grab each other's penises and stick fingers up their fellow members' anuses; online personal ads, where straight men seek other straight men to masturbate with; and, last but not least, the long and clandestine history of straight men frequenting public restrooms for sexual encounters with other men.
Ward addresses those concerns head on. In other words, she is not as quick to explain away the sexual component of these sexual interactions as the rest of us tend to be. Not Gay takes readers on a tour of a wide range of settings in which straight white men have sex with other men, usually also straight and white, but not always. She uses Hunter S. Finally, we are reminded of the many religious and political leaders in the late twentieth century who survived scandals following same-sex encounters, and continued to live their lives as straight men. One reaction to stories like this is to insist that these men are really gay. Ward disputes the long-term value of embracing an explanation of sexuality simply for its momentary strategic value.
