Beyond the Lines: An Autobiography

Name the veteran Indian woman pacer who recently announced her retirement from T20 Internationals. Which organisation topped the Fortune's 'Change the World' list ? Union Government recently allowed private chemists to sell which drug? The cabinet of which state has approved life imprisonment for sacrilege of religious text? Who has become the only second Indian woman after Sania Mirza to win a medal in the tennis singles event at the Asian Games? Which Indian team has entered their third successive finals at the Asian Games? Which social media platform has deleted fake accounts targeting world politics?

What a journey it has been for this man!! Had his writings in his career been biased towards a certain party or a family, he would have become the President of India today But as a honest journalist, he had always been critical of the wrongdoings of Govts, irrespective of their party. The narrations are neatly organized in the form of chapters and are independent of each other so that you can pick any chapter to begin with. His detailed account of accompanying Shastri to Tashkent sheds more light on events which have not been disclosed by the Govt. Some of the narrations seems to be based on his hearsay from others.

Indira Gandhi's checkmate on her political opponents, India's Emergency, was a period of controversy and darkness in India's past. In Emergency Retold, Kuldip Nayar revisits the period, breaking down the Prime Minister's move and re-sparking debate everywhere. The Indian President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed announced that India was to fall under a state of emergency, citing what the Congress called internal disturbances. A move that had the hand of Indira Gandhi behind it all through it, the Emergency engulfed India into a period of censure and stripped civilians of their basic rights. Elections were suspended and civil liberties curbed. Indira Gandhi gained totalitarian control over the country and began an assault on all her political opponents who began to be conveniently imprisoned.

As a young law graduate in Sialkot now in Pakistan , Kuldip Nayar witnessed at first hand the collapse of trust between Hindus and Muslims who were living together for generations, and like multitude of population he was forced to migrate to Delhi across the blood-stained plains of Punjab. The new edition of Kuldip Nayar's widely popular autobiography, Beyond the Lines, now comes with several changes including his remarks relating to Shekhar Gupta, Editor, the Express Group, and his reference to a former president of Sikh Student's Union, both of which he retracted and regretted for at the launch. All subsequent editions of the book come with these changes. This book, an account of my life, has taken far longer than I had anticipated. That tenure did not however, for political reasons, last long and I was back in the mill to resume work on my syndicated column.
