Noted Route 66 author, artist and historian, Jerry McClanahan has been mapping Route 66 since his family vacations during the s, when he sat in the back seat of the family Ford, trying to draw his own crude map of the road. Then there followed a decade of wonderful journeys down the Mother Road, from California thru Oklahoma City. These back seat travels left an indelible mark on him, one that eventually came to color the whole fabric of his creativity. Jerry rediscovered Route 66 in , when he and his father made a trip out west, stopping at everything this time.
A Route 66 road trip is a driving adventure along what is probably the most famous road in the world. Historic Route 66 spans over 2, miles and crosses 8 states, starting in Chicago, Illinois and terminating at the Pacific Coast in Santa Monica, California. Later it would support a countless number of vacationing families from the Midwest heading to the Grand Canyon or Disneyland. Today it is that classic road side culture and the appeal of the open road that continues to attract tourists. Even though Route 66 was officially decommissioned in , people from around the world come to drive this mythic highway, stay in vintage motels, gawk at odd roadside attractions, and eat American road food. For some travelers, it is a trip back in time to revisit a road they once traveled on a family holiday, whereas for others a Route 66 road trip is the ultimate symbol of Americana.

These route 66 maps have been created using Google Maps. Within each map the route has been sub-divided into sections to allow you to focus on one chunk at a time. Each sub-division may be enabled or disabled at any time using the checkboxes provided. Route 66 has existed in many different alignments and therefore there is no single way of making this trip. These maps are based on the EZ66 Guide and therefore follow Jerry McClanahan's book's philosophy of a fun, easy to follow tour. Each state map is based on the East to West journey. There will be some amendments needed in order to travel West to East all of which are detailed in the EZ66 Guide and I urge everyone to get a copy.
