Heart of Oak Workshop, Authentic Craftsman & Mission style Built-in Cabinets

Not long ago, a friend of mine referred one of his coworkers to me who was interested in replacing the fireplace-surround of an old bungalow he and his wife had just purchased. Excited by the opportunity, I set up an appointment to visit the site. What I found was a room in desperate need of a makeover. The phone conversation I had with the clients before the meeting gave me an idea of what they were looking for: something traditional, while keeping with the bungalow theme. Armed with a few books and magazine clippings, I met with the new owners. The original mantel and tile surround had seen better days. One project in the book featured a mantelpiece based on the architectural woodwork of The Hill House , designed by Scottish architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

How to Build a Bookcase - Bookcase Building

Mein Zuhause. Genau so.

Bonus points if the TV Shrine design places said digital toy above a fireplace insert. The first well documented built-ins appear during the Middle Ages, like settles. Lift up the lid and you have a storage area. Medieval style settle combines seating and storage area. Seating built into storage — genius. For a time period classified by torture towers and plague they really nailed the furniture thing.

Bill EdgewaterWoodwork. My clients on these two bookcases were neighbors only a couple blocks away. Like most of the houses in our neighborhood theirs was years old and had a beautiful Craftsman style mantel that was original to the house and in excellent condition. There were two insets on either side that did not have any built-ins or if once there were long gone. There were some unique details to the design of the mantel such as the design of the top and the way it wrapped on the walls. I incorporated this detail in the design of the bookcases as well as having moldings custom milled to match those on the existing mantel and baseboards.

Those surviving bungalow and Craftsman built-ins are economical with space and functional in design. A bench tucked against a staircase creates a place for rest or dropping a package in a narrow space. Bookcases make excellent use of the dead space on either side of a chimneybreast. Stacked drawers convert voids in knee walls into useful storage. Perhaps the most elegant built-in is the colonnade, an architectural feature composed of a pedestal or partial wall—anywhere from knee to above-chest height—topped with a column or post. Colonnades typically appear as pairs in the form of room dividers, bisecting a long narrow living room and effectively turning it into two cozy, well-defined spaces within an open plan.

Ahh, built-ins, those elusive, custom storage space savers, that seem to only exist in Craftsman cottages and expensive custom homes and Pinterest. That dweam within a dweam name that movie! All those fantastic storage options and pretty window seats? Another favorite of mine, the bookcases in our Park House. The obvious answer?

A stellar example of a built-in dining room china cabinet, complete with miniature columns and a back-wall mirror to help the room feel larger, complements the bracketed plate rail in this California bungalow. Built-ins are at least part of the reason that bungalows can be so small and still "live large. Built-ins often made their presence known before one even entered a bungalow. Built-in benches were regularly seen on front porches, often with lift-up seats for storage. Inside the door, there might be a built-in hall tree complete with hooks for coats, a mirror, and possibly an umbrella stand; a simpler coat rack with hooks and a shelf for hats; or just a basic bench. In the living room, built-ins took the form of benches around the fireplace, window seats, bookcases sometimes with drawers above or below , writing desks, liquor or smoking cabinets, niches for firewood storage, or even a disappearing bed.
