Stephen King and his son Owen King discuss their new novel, 'Sleeping Beauties'

Stephen King Wrote a Children’s Book

There's a lot of debate in some circles about exactly what sort of author Stephen King is. Genres are either dismissive of him, or claim ownership: people who dislike horror claim that he's not a horror writer; people who dislike fantasy seem willing to pretend that The Dark Tower series just doesn't exist; and some seem to dislike the books he's written that take on a more literary bent, simply because they don't feature those things that go bump in the night. I like to think that I've grown past that now, and that I can take King for who he is, and on a book-by-book basis. I like to think I can do that with anything I read now, frankly — genre be damned. When I was 13, however, that was impossible for me: he wrote horror novels. Anything else, I wasn't really interested. I hated The Hobbit.

The book is currently being developed into a made-for-television movie. It is told from the perspective of an unnamed story-teller, who speaks casually and frankly to the reader, frequently adding his own commentary on characters' motivations and the like. At the beginning, Flagg secretly attempts to assassinate Queen Sasha. He finally succeeds in forcing the Queen's maid to cut the queen while she was giving birth to Thomas, her second child, making her bleed to death. As time passes, and Peter, the older brother, grows older, it becomes more obvious to Flagg that the Crown Prince is a far greater threat to his position as royal wizard than was Sasha. Therefore Flagg has King Roland poisoned and Peter framed for the murder.

Inspiration: Although I had written thirteen novels by the time my daughter had attained an equal number of years, she hadn't read any of them. She's made it clear that she loves me, but has very little interest in my vampires, ghoulies, and slushy crawling things. I sat down one night in our western Maine house to start this story, then called The Napkins. Eventually the tale was told, and Naomi took hold of the finished manuscript with a marked lack of enthusiasm. That look gradually changed to one of rapt interest as the story kidnapped her. It was good to have her come to me later and give me a hug and tell me the only thing wrong with it was that she didn't want it to end. You appear to be using Internet Explorer 7 or earlier.

Reviewed by Arron Clegg. He manages to keep his familiar style of writing, one that keeps us turning the pages, long after the sun has set in the sky, and yet has written in an olde-worlde style that fits in perfectly with the genre. It is a classic fantasy story in every sense. Kings, princes, dragons, wizards and the fight of good against evil. For anybody who enjoys fantasy books but has never given King a try because of his obvious horror roots should definitely give this book a try.
