Best Chinese Books to Learn Mandarin - Elementary Chinese

Learning Chinese is difficult as it is. No need to complicate that more with hard to track resources or unknown textbook gems. These are the best of the best on the market. These can be used both in the classroom but, for Chinese self-learners like me, I completely understand the struggle of identifying which books you should buy. Are they the correct level? Is there English also?

We all know that learning Chinese online is getting more and more popular. But sometimes you really just need to hit the books. Online learning is all the rage at the moment, and for good reason. Despite this, there are still some significant advantages which books have over online alternatives, making them an indispensable part of your Chinese learning journey. While most websites seek to teach Chinese as a broad topic, books aside from common textbooks are much more specialized. Many deal exclusively with a single topic in a level of depth not found elsewhere.

Learning Chinese will still take a lot of work. FluentU is a service that lets you learn real Chinese using real-world videos like music videos, movie trailers, news, and inspiring talks. They are very detailed flashcards that include grammar patterns and carefully written explanations. They come with example sentences and pictures. All in all, this means that you can learn the vocabulary recommended by these textbooks, and along with that, learn them through fun videos. Talk about killing two birds with one stone!

These are my favorite tools for learning Chinese that make it both fun and a bit easier. I highly recommend this as a cheap option for those who will just be traveling to China for a short period of time. The Pimsleur system works by having you listen to useful phrases spoken by native speakers and repeating them. New phrases are introduced throughout each lesson while old are rehearsed using spaced repetition. They have entire levels which cost hundreds of dollars, but for those who want just a basic foundation like I did before I set foot in China, this Pimseleur beginner series was great. Try the Pimseleur Beginner System. Once I actually arrived in China, however, I switched over to ChinesePod , a subscription-based Mandarin learning program that began as a podcast and has grown into this massive, social learning environment.
