My Promised Land: The Triumph and Tragedy of Israel by Ari Shavit

An authoritative and deeply personal narrative history of the State of Israel, by one of the most influential journalists writing about the Middle East today. Not since Thomas L. Facing unprecedented internal and external pressures, Israel today is at a moment of existential crisis. As it examines the complexities and contradictions of the Israeli condition, My Promised Land asks difficult but important questions: Why did Israel come to be? How did it come to be?

Too much of the discourse on Israel is a doubting discourse. I mean that the state is too often judged for its viability or its validity, as if some fundamental acceptance of its reality is pending upon the resolution of its many problems with itself and with others. In its early years Israel liked to think of itself as an experiment in the realization of various ideals and hopes, but really all societies, including Arab ones, are, in the matter of justice, experiments; and existence itself must never be regarded as an experiment, as if anybody has the authority to declare that the experiment has failed, and to try and do something about it. Israel is not a proposition, it is a country. The problems are not going away. I cannot say the same about the sense of greatness.

This sprawling, ambitious, lyrical book is so important, so informative, and so illuminating that it makes me regret ever having said or written anything about Israel before having read it.
