Ian Hunter (singer) - Wikiwand

T he early to mid s were a strange, uneasy time for rock music. The countercultural dreams of the late 60s had faded, and punk's nihilistic furies had yet to materialise. In their very different ways, glam rock and "prog" both cocked a snook at the idea of authenticity and put a new emphasis on artifice and conceit. Moreover, rock had now acquired enough mythic baggage to partially cut itself off from anything sociopolitical and begin celebrating itself — a development that would be decisively marked in by a Rolling Stones single which camply rejoiced in the fact that the group's music had turned out to stand for nothing much at all. Much like our own time, this was an era of rock for rock's sake — and yet, in a few inspired examples, a degree of self-mythologisation allowed more talented musicians to shine a penetrating light on the human condition: David Bowie's The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars; The Who's Quadrophenia ; the best songs on Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here , effectively a postcard from the absolute height of commercial success; and, from the same year, Elton John's contrasting Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy , a borderline conceptual work focused on his own early career struggles.

Ian Hunter's diary of Mott the Hoople

The book was published 18 months later in June , just as Hunter was leaving the band to embark on a solo career. It chronicles the endless traveling, hotels, sound checks, performances and, notably, strips away the glittering facade of the rock star that the music industry PR machine would have music fans believe. Hunter delivers a distinctly British perspective as he encounters the diverse American cultural landscape. As if aware of his own future career arc, Hunter warns, "It may look flashy, but it's over and you are finished before you know it - if you aren't already broken by one thing it will be another The rock business is a dirty business full stop. When their paths cross as on November 29th in Philadelphia before 2, fans, Bowie would join the band on stage to sing harmony on "Dudes". Hunter comments, "David looks tired, but great

Written on the road - in hotels, dressing rooms, planes, etc - it presents a fascinating fly-on-the-wall picture of a band on the brink of breaking through in the world's biggest music market. It strips away the glossy facade of the music business and details what life is really like on the road. The endless hum-drum cycle of hotels, dressing-rooms, sound-checks, the travelling, and the band's seeming endless quest for cheap guitars in pawn shops. Ian also finds time to describe the cities they visit LA he described as 'Sixty miles of freaks, stars, pretenders and dollar worshippers' and the people he meets. He is also quite candid about the other band members, the road crew, fellow musicians and even his wife 'I'll probably get into a row for writing this' - thankfully they're still together after 46 years.
