Solipsism - Wikipedia

Information—Consciousness—Reality pp Cite as. Finally, the human mind faces its own nature. By extending the information-theoretic paradigm, the informational nature of consciousness is uncovered. This gives rise to the very first formal description of consciousness. In attempts to bridge the chasm between the objective and subjective, scientists and philosophers have opened up to the unspeakable. The nature of consciousness, as has been suggested by ancient Eastern and shamanic traditions, is necessarily universal and primal.

Reality Is Not As It Seems

Are We Living in a Computer Simulation?

NEW YORK—If you, me and every person and thing in the cosmos were actually characters in some giant computer game, we would not necessarily know it. He noted the gap between human and chimpanzee intelligence, despite the fact that we share more than 98 percent of our DNA. Somewhere out there could be a being whose intelligence is that much greater than our own. A popular argument for the simulation hypothesis came from University of Oxford philosopher Nick Bostrum in , when he suggested that members of an advanced civilization with enormous computing power might decide to run simulations of their ancestors. They would probably have the ability to run many, many such simulations, to the point where the vast majority of minds would actually be artificial ones within such simulations, rather than the original ancestral minds. So simple statistics suggest it is much more likely that we are among the simulated minds. And there are other reasons to think we might be virtual.

On The Genealogy of Morals

Lots of non-fiction. And my favorite moments reading non-fiction are when a book bitchslaps my brain and reconfigures my entire understanding of reality and my place within it. I get a lot of emails asking me for book recommendations. Gilbert is a famous Harvard psychologist who has a knack for coming up with zany experiments that show just how flawed and biased the human mind is. In the book, he shows you time and again that as humans, we inaccurately judge, among other things, what made us happy in the past, what will make us happy in the future, and even what is making us happy right at this moment. Read This Book If… …you enjoy Harvard professors who reference The Beatles in every chapter and make jokes about quadriplegics. On The Genealogy of Morals , perhaps his shortest and most influential work, was starkest of all.

Reality is the sum or aggregate of all that is real or existent, as opposed to that which is only imaginary. The term is also used to refer to the ontological status of things, indicating their existence. Ontological questions also feature in diverse branches of philosophy, including the philosophy of science , philosophy of religion , philosophy of mathematics , and philosophical logic. These include questions about whether only physical objects are real i. A common colloquial usage would have reality mean "perceptions, beliefs, and attitudes toward reality", as in "My reality is not your reality. For example, in a religious discussion between friends, one might say attempting humor , "You might disagree, but in my reality, everyone goes to heaven.

As an epistemological position, solipsism holds that knowledge of anything outside one's own mind is unsure; the external world and other minds cannot be known and might not exist outside the mind.
