Summer and SmokeAlma is an extremely proper ministers daughter, who, burdened with the care of a mentally disturbed mother, functions as the woman of the house. Her upbringing, her intense and sensitive nature, and her premature responsibilities have made her spinsterish and uncomfortable with other young people. Nonetheless she is in love with John, a dissolute young doctor who she has known since childhood. Their relationship effects dramatic changes in their respective philosophies but Fate decrees that they always cross each others lives at the wrong time and thus remain estranged from each other. The following scene, from the prologue when Alma and John are children, foreshadows the characterizations and the mood of the play.

After a disappointing Broadway run in , the play was a hit Off-Broadway in In , Williams revised the play as The Eccentricities of a Nightingale. She, ineffably refined, identifies with the Gothic cathedral, "reaching up to something beyond attainment"; her name, as Williams makes clear during the play, means "soul" in Spanish; whereas Buchanan, doctor and sensualist, defies her with the soulless anatomy chart.
