Matrix is thus, defined as a rectangular array of ordered numbers in rows and columns. The numbers are also known as elements of matrix. A matrix consisting of m rows and n columns is written in the form as: The first subscript 'm' refers to the 'number of rows' and the second subscript 'n' refers to the 'number of columns' in the particular matrix. Thus a12 is the element of 1 st row and 2 nd column in the matrix. Similarly, a21 is the element of 2 nd row and 1 st column, and aij refers to the element of i th row and j th column in the matrix.
