Traceyhd's Review Of The Medieval Scapini Tarot

The Medieval Scapini Tarot by Scapini Luigi

View Full Version : Medieval Scapini - getting the right one. I've heard that there are two kinds of Medieval Scapini deck - e. I want the ones with "silky cardstock, rich colours, burnished gold". I don't want the ones with "plasticky cards, stuck together with lacquer, muddy colours, ugly, muddy gold and out of focus images". How can I tell if the decks for sale on amazon or wherever are the good kind, or the bad kind? The linked to thread says to look for the window in the box, but none of the ones I see on amazon look like that.

This deck is such a delight, and I came across it completely by accident. It features figures in 15th century ish attire, and is decidedly medieval in tone. And the figures depicted in the cards have so much personality it almost hurts me to look at them. One thing that makes this deck truly unique is the design of the Minor Arcana. Even though this is a TdM deck, Scapini has painstakingly illustrated all of the Minor Arcana with vivid scenes.

Tarot Reviews - Medieval Scapini Tarot Deck

The Major Arcana and court cards have gold backgrounds in the manner of fifteenth-century European decks. Both the Major and Minor Arcana include full scenes. In the Minors, symmetrical arrangements of the suit symbols provide composition around which the scenes are arranged. The depth of Scapini's art history expertise is evident in his lush settings and period costumes. Interesting details, and sometimes-humorous references, are cleverly imbedded in the artwork, with many of the cards depicting historical figures, for example, Rasputin as the Knight of Cups.
