The story is narrated by a sixteen-year-old female cancer patient named Hazel Grace Lancaster , who is forced by her parents to attend a support group , where she subsequently meets and falls in love with the seventeen-year-old Augustus Waters , an ex-basketball player and amputee. On his Tumblr blog and his YouTube blog, Green stated that "the title is inspired by a famous line from Shakespeare's play Julius Caesar Act 1, scene 2. Sixteen year-old Hazel Grace Lancaster is forced by her parents to attend a support group for children living with cancer. Hazel finished high school early, and had already begun to pursue a college education. Isaac , a friend, also attends the support group. Isaac lost his eye to cancer at a young age and has just learned that he must have the other removed, which will result in his permanent loss of vision. Isaac is best friends with Augustus "Gus" Waters , a former basketball star who lost his right leg to osteosarcoma, and is in remission.

The book has a January 10 on-sale date and, in his post, Green said the mistake by the retailer is "disappointing" but that it is not his "wish to see Barnes and Noble or any of their employees vilified. In June, Green tweeted to his more than 1 million Twitter followers — as well as numerous Facebook fans and YouTube subscribers — about his plan to put his John Hancock on all those books. That announcement shot the book to 1 on Amazon and 2 on bn. The rep told PW : "We don't think this takes away from what we've done here. Subscribers: to set up your digital access click here.
