A Critical Review of Deep and Wide by Andy Stanley • Gospel Post

A couple of pastor friends of mine encouraged me to read Deep and Wide by Andy Stanley when I had no intentions of every buying it or reading it. He preaches that way too. It certainly has appeal and makes for easy reading. The book is broken up into five sections, the first one being a personal account of his life as the son of Charles Stanley. All of this information is setting up the background for the launch of North Point Church which has become THE church that the un-churched love to attend. The Second section deals more with how North Point was formed as a church plant.

Andy Stanley is one of the most influential leaders in American Christianity today, widely read and listened to. Though he has published on his ministry approach and strategy previously, Deep and Wide: Creating Churches Unchurched People Love to Attend Zondervan, is the book that speaks most directly to his experience with North Point Community Church. He shares his own story, the story of how North Point began, and their approach to ministry.

After reading so many positive and so few critical reviews on this book I decided to throw down some thoughts. Just felt like this review My first book review may be helpful. Obvious I know. Chapter 1 and 2 chronicle the story well. These two chapters were by far the best of the book. God granted Andy much courage to do the right thing even with the uncertainty that comes with leaving a church like FBC Atlanta. Following those fist two chapters, there was little in the book that I found helpful.

Andy Stanley is fed up. In this book, he pulls back the curtain to reveal the secrets that North Point Church has discovered—showing how they created a church that un-churched people love to attend. Andy states that his goal in this book is not to convince everyone that they need to do church the way North Point does church. He wants to challenge church leaders to reach people that no one else is reaching … and then have the courage to make the changes to actually go reach those people. As you can probably guess from the title of the book, the focus is twofold; creating churches whose impact is deep and creating churches whose reach is wide.
