As Game of Thrones finally comes to an end with season 8, many fans of the book are still waiting for creator George R. Martin to complete the novels that the HBO series is based on. The most recent book A Dance with Dragons was released back in , which came out six years after A Feast for Crows. This makes the current nine year wait the longest that book fans have had to wait for a new instalment in the series. George R. Since the previous book was published he has been busy helping produce the show during the earlier seasons, even writing some of the scripts.

He began the first volume of the series, A Game of Thrones , in , and it was published in Martin, who initially envisioned the series as a trilogy, has published five out of a planned seven volumes. The fifth and most recent volume of the series, A Dance with Dragons , was published in and took Martin six years to write. He is currently writing the sixth novel, The Winds of Winter. The point of view of each chapter in the story is a limited perspective of a range of characters growing from nine in the first novel, to 31 characters by the fifth novel. Three main stories interweave: a dynastic war among several families for control of Westeros, the rising threat of the supernatural Others in northernmost Westeros, and the ambition of Daenerys Targaryen , the deposed king's exiled daughter, to assume the Iron Throne. An assortment of disparate and subjective points of view confronts the reader, and the success or survival of point of view characters is never assured.

A Dance with Dragons is the fifth book in George R. It does not, however, follow the traditional pattern of picking up where the fourth book left off. Rather, due to the fourth book ballooning out of control during writing, A Dance with Dragons picks up where the third book left off. Not until more than halfway through the book is a plot thread from the fourth book continued chronologically. And make no mistake, the concentration is all on the North and Essos.

We're calling it The World of Ice and Fire mainly because The World of George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire is too long and cumbersome to The “world book” will be a big undertaking, and much too complicated for.

It will take place after the concurrent fourth and fifth books in the series, A Feast for Crows and A Dance with Dragons The previous installment, A Dance with Dragons covers less story than Martin intended, omitting at least one planned large battle sequence and leaving several character threads ending in cliff-hangers. Martin confirmed in March that the final two novels will take readers further north than any of the previous books: "What lies really north in my books—we haven't explored that yet, but we will in the last two books.
