Dating You / Hating You by Christina Lauren

It seems like whenever a newly-divorced celebrity gives an interview, she follows the same script. So last year when Angelina Jolie told the Sunday Telegraph that she hates being single, it was a breath of fresh air. Also like her, I initiated the split from my husband. And now we have something else in common: we prefer to be part of a couple. I remember a Halloween when my husband and I were first dating: I stayed up late sewing a costume for him to wear to a party; he was an angel to my devil. I thought it was cute because he was the one more likely to be seen as devilish — the goateed artist and longtime bachelor, dating a cute blonde college student 17 years his junior.

Last year around this time, I was going through some shit, to put it delicately. Oh, and I was single; so, it being January in New York City, not having a warm body to cuddle up to only amplified how much I really fucking hate the cold. I needed an escape. Not a physical one, because, you know, life, but something to get me out of my own head. It did, however, make me feel less alone in what I was going through. It didn't tell me to stop being upset or start thinking about something else.

We live in a world where, when you get to a certain age, there is a lot of pressure to be in a relationship. Everyone asks, How can you be in your twenties and still be single? What is wrong with you? When are you going to get married? For years that was my story: a girl depressed at not being where other people expected her to be. A girl who wanted badly to be with someone, anyone, just so she could fit in with the world. This book is written to share that story with transparency and to encourage every single girl to know that you are not alone in this walk.
