Augustine: The world is a book?
It's Metafilter's 20th anniversary! To celebrate, scan some cats or help fund Mefi! Source of supposed Augustine quote? Augustine of Hippo, but I begin to doubt that it is his: "The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page. Any help? This does appear in Bartlett's Quotations, but a librarian here told me that this might be a false attribution. The only version I can find of that quote with a source seems to be the following: The world is a great book, of which they that never stir from home read only a page.
PREPARE YOURSELF FOR TRAVEL
It went something like this:. Seems that Dad was ahead of his time. The trouble is, the pairings are oft-wrong. But rather than using that as a metaphor to promote travel, he is proclaiming that the world shows the working out of biblical principles. Translated from Latin, he writes,. If, after all that you have read, you are still in doubt, be convinced by what you see. By all means let us give up arguing from ancient manuscripts, public archives, or the act of courts, civil or ecclesiastical.
