The novel revolves around the nine year-old protagonist, Oskar Schell who lost his father in the when the World Trade Center was attacked on September 11th. Oskar goes all over New York City talking to people with the last name Black in order to find who the key belongs to and see if they knew his father. Eventually, he finds a man named William Black who sold his father the vase and accidentally left the key inside. Oskar is disappointed that William did not know his father. Grandpa had written countless letters to his son but never sent them.
His body has never been found, so the coffin they are going to bury is empty. While they are travelling to the cemetery, Oskar invents all sorts of things to keep his mind of what is really happening: the burial of this father. He also remembers the game he and his father used to play: Reconnaissance Expedition. This was some sort of a quest in which Oskar would have to find things, based on the clues his father gave him. New York used to have 6, not 5 boroughs. So non of his family members should be anywhere near the World Trade Centre.
